Healthcare Mediation
The Problem
When we engage with the healthcare system we expect to be treated with respect and listened to. Above all we want to be safe in the hands of our healthcare providers and receive the most appropriate treatment to address our health issues. When we get hurt because the surgeon made a mistake or the wrong medications were prescribed, or even worse a loved one dies because a medical error we need a way to address our hurt and pain. When we receive a bill for the services provided, we expect the charges to be fair, predictable and related to the services we consented to.
Unfortunately, these expectations are likely to go unmet in our current system. Healthcare providers have little time to listen to their patients, hospitals routinely pile up unexpected charges, and insurance companies seem primarily interested in not paying for the care that we thought we were insured for.
While there are exceptions to these rules, the likelihood that we will be confronted with a dispute related to our care at the most inopportune moment possible, is fairly high.
Why hire a Healthcare Mediator?
Generally, in the healthcare environment, we will be dealing with individuals of goodwill who are just trying the best they can in a system that is crushingly complex and stacked against patients and providers alike. It is precisely for this reason that mediation is often the more productive route to get our needs met.
As with any conflict, legal action is likely to destroy relationships unnecessarily, is unpredictable in its outcomes and incredibly costly.
In a mediation process, clients tend to find that their most important concerns are better addressed, while each side gets heard. The full hearing of different perspectives outside a legal proceeding, sharply increases the likelihood of coming to an agreement with an increased appreciation of the other party’s perspective. In contrast to legal action, a mediation can be wrapped-up in a matter of days to weeks, instead of years of high stress and costly legal proceedings.
